DIY Natural Toothpaste with doTerra Essential Oils

Jun 24, 2015

Do you know what’s in your toothpaste?

We all know by now that fluoride is toxic and should not be swallowed. So why do we still use it?  Have you ever noticed the warning on a tube of toothpaste about the dangers of ingesting fluoride?

This really isn’t rocket science. If it does harm in large doses, doesn’t it stand to reason that smaller doses probably isn’t a wise choice either?  I encourage you to do a little research of your own.

I will spare the rant though because if you are reading this blog you probably already  have an interest in treating your body more naturally.

So today I have put my DYI skills to use and put together a homemade toothpaste that is fluoride-free, preservative-free, glycerin-free and will leave your mouth feeling minty fresh!

After doing the research, I consider peppermint, cinnamon, spearmint, clove, and myrrh essential oils to be the top five essential oils for healthy teeth and gums. Dental health is enormously important. It affects not just what goes on in your mouth, but the health of your whole body.

I use ONLY use doTerra Essential Oils in all my DIY’s as they are 100% certified  pure therapeutic grade and safe for this purposes. All essential oils are not created equally.  (Read more about CPTG standards)

  • 6 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 4 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp Xylitol**
  • 30 drops  (20 peppermint + 10 OnGuard)

** Read why Xylitol is so beneficial here.

  • Mix baking soda, coconut oil and xylitol together until it becomes paste (you may need to melt the coconut oil if it has solidified due to cooler temps)
  • Always drop essential oils last
  • Stir and taste.

And there you have it! Your very own all-natural whitening & remineralizing toothpaste. All the ingredients provide health benefits in addition to cleaning the teeth.

This is certainly a recipe you can tweak with different flavours and essential oils.  Store in a glass jar with tight lid and use everyday!

If you need to order oils you can do so HERE.

Hi erin 🙂 🙂 this recipe looks great! I’ve been keen to try out alternatives to toothpaste – even the sexy organic ones. How long does this blend typically last for? Like, would i have to use it in a specific amount of time do you reckon?

      Hey Carly,
      It’s a great alternative!
So cheap!! I love the way the baking soda gives your teeth an extra polish and shine.
I make mine in a sealed glass jar and its made with ingredients that last so I don’t see why it won’t last for ages 😉
I’d love to hear your feedback!
