What if I were to tell you that the secret to glowing, dewy, luminous, poreless looking skin is to cleanse with oil??

If you are like I was, you’ll be envisioning an oil slick shine, zit-faced image…but just hear me out and you too will be face up to the basin!

My many years as an aesthetician, I have seen first hand how over cleansing or using harsh cleansers can wreak havoc on your skin.  So irritated and overstimulated with the impression that ‘cleaner is better’….and this is why I have to say over and over again- less is more and it’s time to get back to basics.

The answer is oil.  Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it.  It is there to provide a function and protect your skin, so embrace it and learn to love it!

The objective of using this cleansing method is to deep clean while balancing our skins oil production at the same time.

How does it works:

So why doesn’t the typically washing with water not work?  Water does not dissolve oil.   In this case, oil dissolves oil. Like dissolves like.  This is why the oil cleaning method is the way to go.

By using oil on your face you are dissolving makeup, dirt, pollution, and other grime that has accumulated over the the course of the day and replacing it with protective nourishing oil.

Lets DO it!

  1. Cleanse your face by rubbing the oil of your choice all over your face (no need to pre-clean first even with a full face of makeup….truuuuuuuust me, just try it!)
  2. Massage in for at least a minute. Give the oil enough time to dissolve the impurities in your pores. (deep breathe and calm your mind at the end of the day)
  3. Soak a washcloth with warm-hot water and ring out gently.
  4. Cover your face with the steamy washcloth and press for a few seconds or until cool. Rinse the washcloth.  I usually repeat the process 2 to 3 times (depending if I have a lot of make up on) or until the oil and all the grime has been removed from your face.

Your skin will be left protected and healthy.  Skin that is allowed to maintain its natural barriers is healthy skin from deep down meaning fewer breakouts, less wrinkling, better tone and won’t go into over-drive to produce more oil to replace what has been striped.

Everyone is different so it can take time for your skin to adjust to the new cleansing regime but I urge you to sick with it!

When You Should Oil Cleanse:

First and foremost, this is typically done in the evening, prior to bed. No matter how tired I am, I ALWAYS will wash my face before I go to sleep (that’s the aestheticians knowledge ingrained deep down inside me). Who knows what it has accumulated during the day so laying in it all night is not cool.

In the morning, I typically just splash my face with cold water.  There is no need to throughly cleanse after sleeping as your skin has been in its repair/renewal phase.

My TOP oil cleansing picks:

  • Jojoba oil – it has absorption properties that are similar to our skins own sebum and absorbs easily into the skin, and delivers instant hydration and moisturization.  It tricks your pores into thinking they are already saturated with oil and therefore that they do not need to overproduce. Jojoba has no scent and is  lightweight.  It contains nutrients like vitamin E and B, as well as minerals like chromium, copper, and zinc, which all nourish and protect skin from the effects of ageing. It has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to tame acne, ease the redness and pain of eczema.
  • Coconut Oil– is very good at hydrating skin.  It sinks in deep, conditions, moisturizes, and softens skin.  Coconut oil penetrates your skin on a deeper level because of its low molecular weight and the way it bonds with proteins. Coconut oil naturally clears away dirt, grime, and dead skin cells. It even has some antibacterial properties, killing off harmful bacteria while hydrating skin to keep it looking and feeling vibrant. With its antimicrobial properties and moisturizing abilities, coconut oil for skin is perfect to clean your face.
  • Castor Oil-has been made famous all over the world for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Castor oil, when applied to the skin, penetrates deeply and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.  This, in turn, helps soften and hydrate the skin. It delays the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and makes the skin smoother, softer, and younger.  Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid that fights off the acne-causing bacteria.  The highly concentrated fatty acids penetrate the skin easily. This helps remove dry patches and restores hydration of the skin.  Castor oil is crammed with fatty acids, specifically omega-3 fatty acids. These omega-3s hydrate the skin, while stimulating the growth of healthy tissues.
  • Rosehip oil – has healing and anti-microbial properties. High levels of vitamins C and A. Relatively non-greasy as it soaks into the skin easily. Its antioxidant and anti-microbial properties can minimize the growth of bacteria so as to avoid different types of breakout. It has been used for generations because of its healing properties.

Skin Brightener: Add lemon oil to your facial cleanser to help remove dead skin cells and create a fresh clear complexion.         (Be sure to avoid direct sunlight for 12hr after applications due to it being a photosensitive oil)

Screen Shot 2016-02-10 at 7.25.39 PMTea Tree (aka Melaleuca)- is well-known for its powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to heal. One of the most common uses for tea tree oil is in acne products but without negative side effects that many people experience including red, dried and peeling skin from other commercial products.

The essential oil I use is DōTERRA.  This company is the company that I trust and has the highest standards of purity. Quality makes a huge difference when using for therapeutic purposes.

  • Essentials oils are highly concentrated and because of this, I recommend you use glass containers when storing them so they don’t eat away any of the plastic.
  • When using lemon essential oil be cautious with sun exposure as citrus oils cause photosensitivity.
  • Store in a dispenser or air tight jar and keep it in a cool place.
